MMRGlobal Adds Online Prescription Patent to Its Growing IP Portfolio

MMRGlobal, creator of the MyMedicalRecords personal health record (PHR) solution, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office have given the company a Notice of Allowance (NOA) regarding its online prescription management technology.

The new patent, officially called "Method for Providing a User with a Service for Accessing and Collecting Prescriptions," includes 28 claims covering electronic communications that connect patients, consumers and physicians to pharmacies.

"The 28 additional claims from the 'Prescription Management' NOA announced today are directed toward online access and management of prescriptions and should increase the value of MMR's intellectual property (IP)," stated John Goodhue of Voorhees & Sease, a firm providing patent-related legal services to MMRGlobal.

The new patent is part of MMRGlobal's ongoing efforts to increase revenues by leveraging its IP. The efforts have involved both new patents and numerous patent infringement lawsuits.

By solidifying its patent portfolio, MMRGlobal expects to generate new income from licensing. The company has been awarded eight U.S. patents and has 21 pending applications in the U.S. In addition, the company has pending applications throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

According to a company report issued on May 2, 2013, the MMRGlobal patent portfolio could reach a value totaling between $800 million and $1.1 billion.

Prescription Management patent will cover solutions that allow both consumers and healthcare professionals to electronically send prescriptions to a pharmacy. Additionally, the patent will cover technology allowing patients to access prescriptions, schedule refills, receive refill reminders and research potential drug interactions.

"MMR's patent strategy is to continue to expand its portfolio to cover our ongoing developments in technology, which will increase licensing opportunities and value to existing licensees who benefit when new patents are granted," explained MMRGlobal CEO Robert H. Lorsch.

"MMR also plans to continue to file continuation patent applications directed to expanding claims in selected markets such as pharmacies, personal health records and patient portals, amongst others."
