Sonamba: mHealth Solution that Takes Care of the Elderly

Concerned about the welfare of the elderly who are living alone and far away from their kith and kin, the founders of pomdevices, LLC, have focused on building affordable and reliable devices that are expected to help seniors stay connected yet still be independent.

Founded in 2009, the entrepreneurs, who have been successfully creating products for more than 20 years, came up with Sonamba, a Wellbeing Monitoring System that alerts caregivers about the status of seniors. It also includes a personal emergency response, medication reminder, social communications and more.

Sonamba is the first easy-to-use, mass-market device from pomdevices that delivers richer and much needed functionality to help bring peace of mind to elderly care and alleviates the “guilty feeling” that boomers experience when they are not physically close to their elderly parents who are all alone and have to fend for themselves.

Such guilty feelings tend to get magnified when “a slip or a fall” or frequent hospital visits reveal the fragile nature of the elderly and the declining state of their health. In fact research states that sometimes boomers are not aware of how little time is left.

It is at times like these that boomers like to stay in touch with their parents and also be able to monitor their health. Company officials stated that Sonamba, a seven-inch easy-to-use device happens to do both.

Incorporated with social communication features similar to that of Facebook and the ability of photo-sharing and text messaging, Sonamba helps busy boomers to exchange valuable conversations and share photos and send messages through the web portal or with the help of an iPhone app.

Motion and sound sensors that track activity levels enable boomers to always remain informed about the well being of their parents. These sensors can be placed in the room that elders spend most of their time in with a provision for adding additional sensors in vulnerable places in the house. Set up is easy.

Sonamba and SonambaPro will exhibit at ShowStoppers and the International CES show in Las Vegas, from January 10-13, 2012.

In related news, Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the U.S.-based mobile technology arm of Telit Communications Plc announced that its GE865-QUAD M2M module was selected by pomdevices, to provide cellular connectivity for its Sonamba Wellbeing status monitor, an mHealth solution connecting seniors living independently to their caregivers every day, not just in emergencies.
