E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes

With the New Year in full bloom, many people will be looking to finally kick their smoking habit. Many will have tried to go cold turkey; however, this isn’t sustainable – the NHS reports that only 3 in 100 people will quit smoking cold turkey, that’s a whopping 97% fail rate!

That’s got to make you feel like you’re doomed before you even start, right?

There is good news! A major clinical trial published in 2019 found that, when combined with expert face-to-face support, people who used e-cigs to quit smoking were twice as likely to succeed as people who used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum.

So what exactly is an e-cigarette?

In simple terms, an e-cig is an electronic device that allows you to inhale nicotine without any of the nasty chemicals from cigarettes such as tar or carbon monoxide. The liquid is made up of four core ingredients, nicotine, propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (vg) as well as flavourings.

There are various different types of e-cigs, which you choose is down to personal preference.

Vape Pens and Pod Systems – These are compact rechargeable devices with a small tank for e-liquid. They come with a rechargeable battery and some pod systems have variable power.

Mods – Mods come in a range of different sizes. They have a refillable tank, long lasting rechargeable batteries and variable power settings.

What types of e-liquid are there?

There are hundreds of different e-liquid flavours to choose from, it may sound daunting at first, but in reality, it’s one of the best parts of vaping!

Whether you are a fruity lover, a dessert fan or you’d like a traditional tobacco flavour, there is something for everyone.

It is important to note that any e-liquid you purchase over 10ml will not contain nicotine, you will need to purchase this separately, the amount depends on the strength of nicotine you desire. For more help on this visit your local vape shop.

Will an e-cigarette help me to stop smoking?

NHS statistics show that thousands of people across the UK have already stopped smoking with the use of an e-cig. Using an e-cig helps you to manage your nicotine cravings – to get the best out of you e-cig make sure that you are using the correct strength nicotine, too little and you might reach for those pesky cigarettes, too much and it may cause a headache.

Once you have successfully kicked your smoking habit, you can start to reduce the amount of nicotine you are using in your e-cig, eventually you will no longer need nicotine – hooray!

How safe are e-cigarettes?

It is a common misconception that e-cigs are unsafe, especially with all the noise in the US at the moment.

However, in the UK E-cigs go through rigorous testing procedures and are tightly regulated, as a result of this they are very safe to use and carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes.

Leading health organisations including the British Medical Association, Cancer Research and the Royal College of General Practitioners agree that e-cigs are at least 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

No matter which route you decide to go down, everybody’s journey is different, what works for one may not work for another, so it is important to find what works best for you. Have a play around with different flavours and nicotine strengths and you’ll soon find one that’ll take you from a 20 a day smoker to a vape enthusiast.
