The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and Health 2.0 have announced the winners of the popHealth Tool Development Challenge. The three winners of this challenge, Team popEYE, Team Agent and Team greatOne were recognized during the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference.
In a release, Wil Yu, Special Assistant for Innovations at ONC, said, "We are very excited about the winning applications. The popHealth tool is a cutting-edge technology that was able to support a highly technical competition. The winning teams displayed impressive levels of understanding in the areas of meaningful use and provider-patient interaction, which resulted in unique and useful solutions. We look forward to seeing advancements to the teams' solutions in the future."
The popHealth Tool Development Challenge was launched on October 3, 2011 as part of ONC's investment drive in innovation and was run through the Health 2.0 Developer Challenge program. The challenge invited participation from multi-disciplinary teams to develop applications based on the popHealth open-source architecture as well as its advanced capabilities and standards, and sample datasets to help enhance patient care and increase visibility into patient populations.
Team popEYE was ranked in the first position for its popHealth app which was submitted by Chintan Patel, Sharib Khan and Aamir Hussain. The application can be used by providers to create patient-engagement reminders for the popHealth measures as it uses the cloud-based phone service Twilio to call patients and delivers the reminder message as set by the provider. The application also delivers providers with the call outcomes and subsequent patient responses.
Team Agent came in second for its Agent solution developed by Chris Han and Calvin Han. The Agent solution further expands the popHealth framework with vital enhancements which include demographic statistics and graphs, population and patient medication and conditions among other functions. Providers can use these functions to track conditions over a period of time for optimizing sharing of reports, for comparing populations and for providing access to these reports to their patients.
Team greatOne submitted the QualiMax application which has been developed by team members Mauricio Alarcon and Frances Morrison. QualiMax which has been designed with a simple user interface enables providers to leverage quality measures and to track down disparities by compiling data from public health and scientific research sites.
