Healthcare Technology and News: GlobalMedia TotalExam Camera for Telemedicine Excels in Reliability and Usability

Telehealth Technology Assessment Center or TTAC announced that GlobalMedia’s TotalExam Camera ranked first with respect to reliability, mechanics and ease of use.

The announcement was made after a review of patient examination cameras used for telemedicine. The head-to-head comparison included AMD-2500 camera; home video cameras from Canon, Insignia, Panasonic and Sony; a Panasonic 10 megapixel digital still camera; and the GE Home Monitor, a security camera system, said TTAC sources.

According to TTAC officials the simplicity of TotalExam was an added advantage and the single-purpose design made the device easy to connect, configure and use in a patient examination.

Several other factors made TTAC decide in favor of TotalExam. The images produced by TotalExam were superior to images from camcorders and digital cameras when viewed through live feeds, said TTAC sources. The device from GlobalMedia measures 5.5 inch (140mm) and it weighs only eight ounces or 229 grams. The size can be compared to that of a dry erase marker and has been designed especially to be held like an eraser while conducting patient exams.

Also the onboard LED light carousel enables the clinician to choose one of three brightness settings. TotalExam incorporates dual-focus, freeze-frame capture and electronic Skin Tone Balance in one unit making the camera suitable for a variety of medical applications.

TotalExam comes equipped with a derm hood and an initial supply of disposable touch collars for getting crystal clear closeups of skin and eyes that can be stored and forwarded. The tongue depressor adaptor accepts standard tongue depressors snaps on to TotalExam for intraoral images, said GlobalMedia sources.

GlobalMedia designs, manufactures and markets telemedicine solutions and medical image automation systems. Its camera, image management, store-and-forward, videoconferencing and video streaming technologies enhance healthcare provided by pathologists, dermatologists, pediatricians, neurologists, surgeons, pharmacists, forensic MDs, emergency medicine departments and other caregivers.

GlobalMedia Group signed a distributor agreement with Presto Infosolutions of India in November 2010 as reported in HealthTechZone. Presto will handle sales of GlobalMedia’s telemedicine solutions in India.
