“The nationwide push for healthcare reform and the focus on electronic health records as a key component in reform are having a measurable impact on health IT demand,” said Irv Lichtenwald, chief financial officer at Medsphere, in a press statement.
Lichtenwald said the company is delighted that Azure Capital Partners, Epic Ventures, Thomas Weisel Venture Partners, Western Technology Investment and a host of physicians and other private investors recognize Medsphere’s ability to rapidly transform the healthcare industry.
Company officials claim that hospitals are adopting Medsphere’s OpenVista “Electronic Health Record” software to improve clinical care and rapidly qualify for federal stimulus funding via an accelerated implementation and adoption process.
OpenVista is the commercialized version of the VistA EHR created and developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs more than 20 years ago. VistA has been a key component in the VA hospital system’s recognition as a national leader in quality patient care.
As OpenVista is an open-source solution, it can be implemented at commercial healthcare facilities much more quickly and cost-effectively than comparable proprietary solutions, officials added.
Back in August, Medsphere Systems Corporation had
announced that Beauregard Memorial Hospital, a 60-bed, acute care and community hospital in DeRidder, La., will implement Medsphere’s OpenVista electronic health record solution to improve clinical outcomes through automated patient care and enhanced communication.
As a rural, acute and primary care facility, Beauregard is on track to fully deploy OpenVista by June 2010 and become eligible for financial incentives as outlined by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
