SuccessEHS Effectively Sends Medical Records to SCHIEx

Technology has been able to change the way people connect with one another. People are able to stay in contact at all times with friends and family, and work through devices such as their cell phones, the Internet, iPads, and other handheld devices. Technology has revolutionized the way we communicate and changes on a daily basis. A new form of collaborative communication is cloud computing.

Cloud computing allows for computers to be linked – letting users access the data and/or software from any other compatible device. Businesses jumped on this technology right away allowing for employees to remain connected to their work whether at home or on a business trip. Considering its popularity, other organizations, such as hospitals and healthcare services, have turned to cloud computing to handle private consumer information.

SuccessEHS was the first ambulatory vendor that was able to send electronic health records (EHR) to a Health Information Exchange in South Carolina. This demonstration showed a significant step in the healthcare industry. As many know when you switch from one doctor to another you need to get all of your health records sent over, which can be time consuming. A lot of times you, as the patient, end up going to the doctor, picking up the records, and dropping them off at the new doctor’s office.

Another problem patients face is when they are forced to go to a hospital, doctor, or clinic that they are not familiar with. In an emergency situation there is not always someone available to let the paramedics or doctors know about any special medical circumstances that could be critical to your survival. Now imagine if all of your records could be sent electronically without the need for a third-party to get involved.

South Carolina’s Health Information Exchange (SCHIEx) allows for health care providers within the state to electronically send/share medical histories, allergies, and procedures for treatment – basically your entire medical history with other providers upon request. This “instant” access could save lives.

“The connectivity demonstration at the 2012 South Carolina Health Information Exchange & Health Information Technology Summit was groundbreaking,” said Adriane Able, SCHIEx executive director.

“Health care providers were able to experience firsthand how SCHIEx works, the successful integration of ‘real time’ standards-based exchange into HER workflow, and the fundamental impact it will have n patient care and the health care system,” said Able. “It speaks to the commitment SuccessEHS is making to health care providers and patients in South Carolina and to advancing the full potential of health information technology.”
