Ekahau Inc., a provider of high performance Wi-Fi-based Real-Time Location Systems, in an announcement with KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG, specialist in endoscopes, medical instruments and devices, introduced a new solution jointly created by both companies which will effectively optimize OR management in real-time. The new solution has already seen successful deployment in a MIC Clinic in Berlin and has provided optimized and automated real-time management of clinical processes for the clinic's OR.

KARL STORZ is the developer of the ORchestrion Steering and Localization Module which has been designed as a software solution capable of providing monitoring and controlling functionality for the various surgical treatment processes carried out in the OR. The integration of the software solution for KARL STORZ with the Ekahau RTLS system will now deliver unprecedented and an automatic overview of the surgical processes to the hospital staff. The joint solution will also allow hospital staff to easily integrate unpredictable emergency cases into current resource planning without impacting the existing work flow.

The new joint solution not only enables easy integration with the current hospital information systems and wireless networks without the need for new infrastructure, but also brings about substantial cost-saving benefits within the day to day OR work-flow. The ORchestrion SLM used by the operating staff at MIC Clinic which offers patient sequence control will leverage the latest generation Wi-Fi tags from Ekahau to effectively address the various issues surrounding monitoring of various resources and their co-ordinated application in the OR. Using the mobile task management offering, hospital staff, nurses and physicians are delivered automated text messages over their portable mobile devices about the patients during the OR process. Patient tracking is enabled by the Ekahau T301W Wearable Wi-Fi tags.

The Ekahau RTLS is a software-based Real Time Location System designed to effectively locate and provide status or assets and people updates by leveraging Wi-Fi networks in a hospital. The Real Time Location System which is not dependant on any kind of proprietary infrastructure installation is capable of delivering enhanced performance as compared to other proprietary approaches which are similar in nature.
