At the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, during the opening ceremony of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) StatVideo demonstrated that its EchoBox.
StatVideo asserted that it assembled and produced the EchoBox, making it the first company to use the facilities at M2D2. EchoBox is a video conferencing system that can be installed over existing infrastructure, allowing one to watch high resolution and high frame rate cardiac ultrasound images over the web in real-time.
Financed by a grant from Massachusetts General Hospital and Department of Defense, EchoBox was developed, marketed and manufactured in Massachusetts. The University of Massachusetts maintained that StatVideo is a good example of a company that is everything the Massachusetts life science cluster is all about. They are going to make a difference in terms of healthcare in the state, but will also contribute to economic growth in Massachusetts.
StatVideo claimed that EchoBox can save time and money by avoiding staff travel and patient transport. It provides improved image acquisition and interpretation and reduces patient call-backs for repeat exams – all at a low cost to purchase, install and operate.
At a hospital or during emergencies, when a consultant or any kind of assist is required, the EchoBox will provide the real-time images users need where and when they need them – saving critical time. Images can be viewed over Hospital Information Systems or the Web, using Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 3G networks.
Officials with StatVideo remarked that EchoBox is used mostly in the management of patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). This year they are launching EchoBox for use in pediatric tele-echocardiography so pediatric cardiologists will be able to stream live images in a secure manner over the Internet.
