Health Techzone Week in Review

Millions of Americans joined the ranks of the insured this week as those who purchased insurance on state or federal exchanges put their Gold, Silver and Bronze plans into action. Let's take a moment to review all of the happenings from the Health Techzone this past week.

This week was a good week for telemedicine. Net Medical Xpress announced a WebRTC-enabled video conferencing solution that can be embedded in websites called RTC Conferencing Switch. The service could enable patients and doctors to converse for free by using video conferencing from within the Chrome or Firefox browsers. The solution is HIPAA-compliant, which ensures that patient information shared over video remains private.

In other telemedicine news, Health Buddy Mobile, a combined effort from GreatCall and Bosch Healthcare, was released. The solution leverages GreatCall's Jitterbug Plus cell phone for seniors and Bosch Healthcare tools for collecting vital signs, monitoring medication compliance, asking mental health questions and offering health coaching.  GreatCall and Bosch Healthcare showcased their solution at CES 2014 this week.

Also this week, guest writer Loren Goldfarb, COO of Everwell/MedVista Media, wrote an article about the potential for using digital signage in waiting rooms to deliver educational content. Instead of listening to Maury Povich say "You are not the father," patients will have access to compelling healthcare content delivered via digital signage.

Goldfarb is hosting a panel at Digital Signage Expo on Feb. 12, 2014, to discuss what types of content should be offered, who will create the content and whether marketing content is acceptable in the healthcare setting. The panel will also discuss how to provide information for non-English speakers as well as for blind and hearing-impaired patients.

These news items are just a taste of the fast-moving developments in healthcare technology from this past week. Visit the Health Techzone daily to stay up-to-date with all of the latest healthcare developments.
