OSI Systems' Spacelabs Healthcare Chosen for $3 Million Telemonitoring System by Illinois Hospital

OSI Systems, Inc., a provider of specialized electronic products for applications in the security and healthcare industries, today announced that its healthcare division, Spacelabs Healthcare, has been chosen by an Illinois-based hospital to provide patient monitoring, telemetry monitoring, ICS clinical access applications and integration solutions.

The contract was for approximately $3 million.

According to the company website, Spacelabs Healthcare division designs and sells patient monitoring, diagnostic cardiology and anesthesia systems, used by care providers in critical care, emergency and peri-operative areas within hospitals as well as in physicians' offices, medical clinics and other centers of healthcare.

Telemetry is changing the face of healthcare. It’s defined as technology behind the measurement and transmission of data over wire, radio or other sources, but that doesn’t begin to explain what it does in the healthcare world.

Using telemetry, doctors can monitor at-risk patients in their homes rather than in hospital rooms, saving money and providing convenience while at the same time, making sure patients are safe and well. More than 25 million adults and children in the U.S., or almost nine percent, have diabetes, and it can help these patients remotely track their glucose levels, then send them to their doctors, who can intervene if necessary. It allows cardiac patients’ to measure their heart rhythms continuously while healthcare providers monitor it from a distance. And it’s doing it all over the world.

Spacelabs has been in the business a long time. In 1958 it was first called upon to find a way to wirelessly monitor the vital signs of astronauts in space.

It also now has solutions for anesthesia delivery and ventilation, management of cardiology data, and self-paced clinical education courses.

A $2.3 million contract from Princeton HealthCare System was received by Spacelabs Healthcare last year. In February of this year OSI Systems was awarded a $2.1 million contract for patient monitoring at a northwest regional hospital system.
