Study: Epocrates is Top Mobile App for Physicians on Tablets, Smartphones

Epocrates is the top medical app among physicians on smartphones and tablets, according to a new study.

Manhattan Research’s “Taking the Pulse U.S. 2012”-- a study of technology adoption and behavior by physicians -- shows that more than half of the physicians using Epocrates on a smartphone, use it daily, according to a company statement. In addition, physicians are most likely to reference info about prescribed drugs over the smartphone during patient consults.

"Epocrates is the first place many physicians turn for concise, trusted information, as demonstrated by these findings," Andy Hurd, president and CEO at  Epocrates, said in a press release. "We are committed to continuing to deliver the clinical content and tools they need in the exact time, place and format they want to access it."

Some 3,015 U.S. physicians were questioned in the online survey.

In other recent company news, Epocrates has projected its 2012 revenue should be between $105 million and $115 million. That’s a decrease of 7 percent to an increase of 1 percent over full year 2011 revenue, the company reports. For the entire 2012 year, the net loss is projected to be between $2.3 million and $4.3 million, the company said in a press release.

Also, the company’s revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2012 was $27.5 million compared to $29.2 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2011. That is a decrease of 6 percent. During the recent 1Q, income from continuing operations was $1.4 million, compared to $0.2 million in the 1Q of 2011. The recent 1Q net loss was $1.4 million compared to $1.1 million for the 1Q ended March 31, 2011. The first quarter of 2012 saw less revenue and higher costs associated with discontinued operations, the company said.

In other matters, last year the company named Avid Chairman and CEO Gary Greenfield to its board of directors, according to HealthTechZone. He is on the audit committee.
