Telehealth Gets a Boost from Phillips and Vidyo Partnership

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has several provisions designed to promote the use of telemedicine to deliver effective patient care.

Telemedicine can allow patients to receive care at their local hospitals while having video interactions with specialists from around the world. Telemedicine can also benefit patients in a home health care context, allowing them to be evaluated remotely for durable medical equipment or for additional medication from a pharmacist.

In addition, telemedicine can help to promote preventive care and treatment in underserved communities, giving people access to medical professionals when they can’t find transportation to a clinic or community health center.

To capitalize on these provisions, Royal Phillips and Vidyo have collaborated to provide flexible and scalable advanced video technology that can work on a variety of platforms including smartphones, tablets and laptops as well as on clinical workstations. Remote physiologic monitoring, clinical decision support and Vidyo’s telepresence solutions will combine to improve the quality of patient care as measured by key performance indicators.

“We are excited to collaborate with Vidyo to leverage its cutting-edge telepresence technologies to enhance the flexibility and scalability of our telehealth solutions,” said Mike Mancuso, senior vice president and general manager of Enterprise Patient Informatics Solutions and Patient Monitoring Systems for Philips Healthcare.

“Philips is committed to working with industry leaders to better address healthcare needs by expanding telehealth services beyond the ICU, as well as externally to remote clinics, physician offices, and into the home.”

Vidyo Adaptive Layering Technology constantly monitors network performance and the capability of endpoint devices to deliver video solutions that are optimized for each unique situation. With Vidyo’s API, telehealth solutions can be customized and integrated into daily clinical workflows.

Vidyo solutions also work on off-the-shelf hardware, resulting in a significant cost savings for medical care providers. Providers will be able to deploy solutions on both public and private networks.

“Telehealth has now come of age, driven by global demand and, in the U.S., empowered by new laws and legislation like the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” noted Dr. Amnon Gavish, senior vice president of Vertical Solutions for Vidyo.

“Healthcare providers and patients alike will benefit from this solution’s extremely natural interaction experience, enabled by the very low latency of Vidyo’s technology. This high-quality experience enhances the remote physician – patient interaction, promoting a higher level of patient trust.”
