Hospital for Special Surgery to License Patents

Intellectual property should be protected at all costs because of the very hard work it takes individuals across all industries to create the solutions that make the world we live in that much better. Protecting this property ensures they will be compensated for their hard work so others can't take advantage of it without proper licensing, which encourages future inventors and tinkerers to come up with new and never before seen technology. A subsidiary of WiLAN, a licensing company, has acquired the orthopedic patent portfolio from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), one of the most highly recognized medical facilities in the world, so it can license its patents more effectively.

Established more than 150 years ago, HSS is considered by many as the leading hospital, specializing in orthopedic surgery, which serves patients from 105 countries around the world. The hospital performs over 25,000 surgical procedures annually, and more hip surgeries and knee replacements than any other hospital in the U.S. Staff from the hospital have been assigned as team physicians and athletic trainers for some of the largest professional teams, including New York Giants, New York Mets, New York Knicks, Association of Tennis Professionals, and many others.

Although details of the exact acquisition have not been revealed, the company stated a global portfolio of more than 30 patents and applications related to orthopedic technologies from HSS were obtained.

As more countries around the world continue to develop the medical technology to carry out these patented procedures, HSS and WiLAN will be able to capitalize on the growing field of orthopedics.

"We are very pleased to have partnered with Hospital for Special Surgery, a truly world-class research hospital. We see a great opportunity to help medical researchers and companies receive fair compensation from the commercialization of their valuable technologies," said Jim Skippen, President & CEO.

As a technology and licensing company WiLAN has licensed its intellectual property to more than 285 companies around the world. The patents have been applied in a wide range of communication and consumer electronics products including 3G and 4G handsets, Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, Wi-Fi and broadband routers, xDSL infrastructure equipment, cellular base stations and digital TV receivers.
