Health Techzone Week in Review

At Thanksgiving time, the Health Techzone had family on its mind. Healthcare technology developers released a number of new solutions for senior care this week.

First up is Caring in Place, an iPhone app designed for people that find themselves suddenly caring for seniors after a fall, car accident or major health event. Caring in Place contains a wide range of checklists that help family members take care of senior needs from filling pillboxes to performing regular blood-pressure checks.

Family members can share checklists, which makes it easy to divvy up responsibilities. Seniors that receive care from family members often have better outcomes than seniors that live in nursing facilities, and the Caring in Place checklists can eliminate the second-guessing that comes with caring for a senior for the first time.

Another solution released this week, the CloudPhone by ollo mobile, is a tiny, one-button device that seniors and their families can keep on key rings, in pockets or hung around the neck like a pendant. Voice Activated Dialing enables seniors to place calls in an emergency, and the CloudPhone's geolocation features and accelerometer lets caregivers know immediately if a senior has a sudden change in physical activity.

Finally, a Danish company called GN Store Nord has released a hearing aid that is compatible with the iPhone. When seniors try to use a mobile phone while wearing a hearing aid, they often have to use an intermediary device between the hearing aid and the phone. With BN Store Nord's LiNX hearing aids, seniors can skip the intermediary device and use the iPhone without a second thought.

LiNX hearing aids use less power than Bluetooth headsets by operating at 2.4 GHz with reduced power consumption. GN Store Nord will release LiNX on a limited basis by the end of 2013 with a full global rollout in Q1 2014.

HealthTechZone encourages you to take some extra time to connect with your senior family members this holiday season. Feel free to visit HealthTechZone next week, but please don't bring your Thanksgiving leftovers.
