Comcast Business Streamlines Operations for Utah Cancer Specialists

For Utah Cancer Specialist’s 12 locations, staying connected and providing the best in patient care is tantamount to its success as a healthcare facility. The organization tapped Comcast Business Internet and Business Ethernet to streamline its many day-to-day operations, including transferring large files, medical records and safe and secure faxing.

The facility has been providing care to cancer patients for over 15 years. Across its 12 locations, Utah Cancer Specialists treats 250-300 patients, many of which come in multiple times per week. Staying organized and HIPAA compliant are just a few priorities at the top of its list. Having an efficient network allows UCS to meet and exceed these priorities.

“Our network not only supports our physicians and the treatment they provide directly to patients, but also the behind-the-scenes work necessary to ensure continuous business operations,” said Ben Harkness, information technology director for Utah Cancer Specialists. “And we not only reduced our monthly costs, but the significant increase in bandwidth also eliminated the daily IT headaches of trying to manage around the limited speeds of our legacy T1 connections so we can focus on new technology initiatives to improve the quality of care and provide the best experience possible for our patients.”

UCS currently uses Comcast Ethernet Network Service to connect multiple locations, including a 200 Mbps connection at their administrative office, a 70 Mbps connection at each of their cancer centers and a 15 Mbps connection at each clinic.

In the healthcare field, effective, timely communications is paramount. The increasing interconnectedness of physician’s offices, diagnostic centers, and hospitals has created the potential for continued, significant gains in the quality of care provided.

Communications solutions like Comcast Business allow for facilities like UCS to provide up-to-date patient information to physicians at the point of care. They also enable important discoveries to come to market faster through better research collaboration, and are helping administrators improve patient experience while achieving savings.

“Our Ethernet services are ideal for supporting the diverse ecosystem of healthcare locations – from hospitals and clinics to offices, data centers and even a physician’s home – so there is consistent, reliable access to technology to improve patient care while providing the flexibility and scalability to grow with the organization as needs change,” said Paul Merritt, director, Comcast Business.

There is no doubt that the way in which business communications services, like VoIP, are delivered is changing how businesses communicate, including healthcare facilities. With its low costs, convenience and portability, and advanced communication features, IP communication benefits everyone from individuals to small offices and hospitals everywhere.
