St. Joseph's Hospital Selects PeriGen to Improve Care for Babies, Mothers

St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center located in Syracuse, N.Y., has selected PeriCALM Tracings, a fetal surveillance system, to provide assessments of labor and fetal heart rates.

The technology will be put to extensive use at the hospital. A Level III Perinatal Care Center, the hospital is the site of some 1,900 births a year. It is also designated a Baby Friendly Hospital by the World Health Organization.

Benefits with the system are no need for double documentation, and users can log onto one application and be automatically authenticated in the other application.

In addition, PeriCALM Tracings features an expanded split screen so health-care providers can view the heart rate of a mother and of a baby both in the present in real time, and over the past two hours. The system lets providers watch for trends over time to prevent errors or complications. PeriCALM Patterns analysis runs in the background.

In addition, PeriCALM uses statistical and pattern recognition software. That makes it more efficient for busy nurses.

"Obstetrics is an area where clinicians and patients benefit significantly from having advanced technology immediately accessible at the bedside," Matthew Sappern, CEO of PeriGen, said in a statement. "Our solutions exist to help clinicians make knowledge-driven decisions."

St. Joseph's decided to get the PeriCALM Tracings offering from PeriGen after seeing interfacing between PeriGen and Epic electronic health records (EHRs) at another hospital.

"We contacted PeriGen in April and moved very quickly to sign a contract with them,” Marty Mulderig, director of Information Services at St. Joseph's Hospital, said in a statement. "We were impressed by the level of integration we saw with Epic. Most importantly, PeriCALM Tracings' advanced fetal surveillance helps us maintain the high standard of care we are recognized for in our community."
