AVI-SPL Introduces ESSENCE Family of Surgical Video Products

Prominent video communications partner AVI-SPL has unveiled what it describes as its “latest innovation in surgical video platforms.” Called ESSENCE (Enterprise Surgical System with Enhanced Network Control over Ethernet), this new offering actually comprises an entire family of surgical video products designed to meet the requirements of clinical workflows, enabling OR staff to efficiently manage surgical video, audio and data, while allowing medical practitioners outside the OR to observe and collaborate with the surgeon and staff.

ESSENCE features both hardware and software solutions to provide this level of functionality, including remote source selection of the OR’s medical video, as well as a unified approach to image capture, video recording, archiving, professional editing, video on demand, and posting images to both system EHR and PACS. In other words, ESSENCE is much more than just video streaming and is actually an invaluable medical tool capable of facilitating two-way connectivity to link OR staff with other clinical specialties.

“ESSENCE is the culmination of a decade of AVI-SPL pioneering Integrated Operating Rooms,” said Tony McClain, vice president of AVI-SPL Medical, in a statement. “ESSENCE allows clinicians to collaborate faster and easier than ever before to improve patient outcomes, which is the ultimate goal.”

ESSENCE is the latest in a recent string of releases from AVI-SPL, with other noteworthy new offerings being new security enhancements for video conferencing — VNOC Symphony Automated Room Shutdown and the Block ME, Don Not Disturb Service — and a new Virtual Meeting Room service.

As for the ESSENCE line, it includes three integrated operating room systems from which to choose, namely the DVI-D-based ESSENCE-Digital, ESSENCE-HD which scales all video to 1080p format, and ESSENCE-IP which encodes images up to 4K resolution into an Internet protocol format at the source. Regardless of the system, however, the entire ESSENCE platform is an FDA rated, Class 1 Medical Device that is both agnostic to medical device manufacturers and able to support legacy surgical technology.
