Health Techzone Week in Review

Welcome to this week's wrapup of the latest healthcare technology developments from Health Techzone. Let's recap some of this past week's top stories.

With the October 1 open enrollment deadline looming, insurance companies are putting the final touches on the products that they plan to sell through the state health insurance exchanges. One of the biggest issues with the new products is to prepare accurate Statement of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) documents for consumers that clearly explain how the insurance policies work.

The HighRoads Benefits Management Plan System, called "The Source," is a SaaS solution designed to help payers publish SBCs and other crucial compliance documents. Users can enter new data once, and The Source will populate the changes throughout the system. The function eliminates multiple manual entries of data, which often result in errors, and allows payers to quickly generate documents that are compliant with the latest healthcare regulations.

In other news, the patent infringement deal between MyMedicalRecords (MMR) and WebMD reached an impasse this week. MMR has re-filed its patent infringement lawsuit, adding one additional patent violation to its list of possible infringements. If no further settlement talks take place, then the lawsuit will head to a federal court.

Also this week, GSMA announced its mHealth Grand Tour. The bicycling challenge, which kicked off on September 5 in Brussels, will take a 13-day journey to Barcelona to raise awareness of diabetes. Approximately 55 million Europeans have diabetes, and the disease gobbles up 10 percent of Europe's healthcare expenditures.

During the event, researchers will track the effects of multi-day endurance exercise on the blood glucose levels of cyclists. The study will capture different bits of data using an integrated mHealth solution. Three groups of cyclists will be studied: elite athletes with Type 1 diabetes, sub-elite athletes with Type 1 diabetes and cyclists that do not have diabetes.

These stories were some of the high points in the world of healthcare technology this week. Enjoy the weekend, and come back to the Health Techzone daily to keep up with the latest developments.
