Nuance Powershare Network to Simplify Sharing Medical Imaging

Standing at almost $3 trillion, the US healthcare system is looking to rein in the out-of-control budget using whatever means necessary. With a system that has a budget bigger than the national GDP of all but three countries in the world, the cost saving measures have to be put in place by addressing specific needs or niches in the industry. One such sector is diagnostic imaging using CT, MRI, Ultrasound and X-Ray, which is responsible for billions of dollars annually. By introducing a system in which medical images can be shared, stored and accessed, healthcare facilities can improve patient care while at the same time reducing costs. Using a network optimized to transmit this valuable information is one-way of delivering diagnostic imaging with more efficiency.

The Nuance PowerShare Network is designed as a cloud-based medical imaging and reporting exchange to give healthcare providers as well as patients a platform to coordinate and share information across different organizations and regions around the country. According to the company, this new network is the industry's largest cloud-based network for securely delivering diagnostic imaging by connecting physicians, patients, government agencies, specialty medical societies and others for sharing this information using social networks.

With this platform all interested parties are able to instantly view the images as well as other related information to diagnose patients and collaborate with other physicians and healthcare providers to deliver the best care possible.

By providing a cloud platform this medical imaging exchange gets rid of the process of managing images on CDs. While this type of storage was acceptable in the past, it was responsible for inefficiencies that resulted in imaging procedures being performed over and over, resulting in higher expenses. Additionally it limited the collaborative process between physicians at different facilities.

With the cloud solution, anyone who has been given access can manage the images to diagnose or treat patients no matter their location. The PowerShare Network delivers easy access to complete patient information for making better and faster care decisions with native EHR integrations while minimizing costs and IT burdens. Because it doesn’t require any VPN or expensive onsite servers, it lowers IT related issues.

Nuance PowerShare Network is used by more than 1,900 provider organizations for sharing images via the cloud using open standards; this includes more than 500,000 clinicians that use Nuance and many of the communications and health related solutions it provides.

“The challenge of sharing images with interpretive reports is something we’ve heard about consistently from our customers and EHR partners, and we know Nuance PowerShare Network will overcome this major obstacle, helping physicians treat patients more efficiently and effectively,” said Peter Durlach, senior vice president of marketing and strategy, Nuance Communications.
