Healthcare Technology and News: Doctors Hospital of Sarasota Selects EXTENSION's Communications Solution

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota is now using EXTENSION's Cisco and smartphone-integrated healthcare team communications solution.

EXTENSION was chosen for its ability to provide real-time, context-aware clinical communications, and to reduce overhead paging providing a quieter healing environment throughout the hospital.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota intends to implement the solution across various departments throughout the main campus and thus it appreciates EXTENSION's enterprise-wide scalability.

Looking forward, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota wants to implement many key functions of EXTENSION's HealthAlert for Nurses solution including Nurse Call Integration to Cisco IP phones and smartphones, Critical Lab Result Notifications to Cisco IP phones and smartphones, STAT Order Notifications to Cisco IP phones and smartphones, Report Availability Alerts to Ordering Physicians via smartphones, Device Messaging to/from Cisco IP phones, smartphones, and other mobile devices.

According to a release, the EXTENSION HealthAlert for Nurses solution also offers staff assignment functionality from a Cisco IP phone or Web browser.

EXTENSION’s endpoint-agnostic solutions can aggregate data from a number of clinical systems and integrate with various communication devices including Cisco IP phones and smartphones.

The 155-bed acute and general care facility has deployed both Cisco 7925 wireless and Cisco 7945 wired IP phones in which EXTENSION will fully integrate. EXTENSION claims that it can also integrate with a range of medical devices and offers a customizable workflow platform in which Doctors Hospital of Sarasota can freely build or adjust clinical workflow routines.

“Our IT and clinical teams thoroughly reviewed EXTENSION as well as other alternatives. We found that EXTENSION allowed us to improve both clinical communication among care providers in various departments and reduced redundancy in care delivery processes,” said Doctors Hospital's chief nursing officer, Kathy Mitchell.

She continued: “Additionally, EXTENSION's messaging functionality was the perfect overhead paging replacement solution for us. Now our nurses and physicians can instantly and quietly communicate with one another without multiple handoffs and less noise which is crucial to improving patient satisfaction and HCAHPS scores.”
