Love's Travel Stops Donates $2 Million to Children's Miracle Network

Buying a paper heart at the gas station may seem like a small act. You may not even think twice about adding an extra charge to your already phenomenal total when you fill up. All of those small donations, however, really add up, especially when they are being collected at 304 locations. Love’s Travel Stops just announced a donation of $2 million to benefit 92 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals across the country.

Evidently, the donations add up very quickly, because the donation followed a fundraising campaign of just five weeks. According to a recent statement, managers went to extremes to ensure that the fundraising efforts were successful; “Across the country, managers shaved their heads, took pies in the face, and even kissed pigs to motivate their teams to raise even more.” Some of the more traditional methods employed included selling paper hearts and organizing events like bake sales, cookouts, golf tournaments, and music concerts.

This year, $1.5 million of the $2 million came from such regional efforts. An additional $500,000 came from, among other things, golf tournaments organized for the corporate employees in Houston and Oklahoma City.

Donations made to the Children’s Miracle Network go towards research and training, purchasing equipment, and paying for uncompensated care. In the 30 years that the organization has been in existence, they have raised more than $4.7 billion, and, as their website notes, most of this astronomical figure was raised just “$1 at a time.”

The CEO of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, John Lauck, says that in the last 15 years, Love’s has been “instrumental” in “helping us make miracles happen for children and families across the U.S.” With such supporters as Love’s Travel Stops, the Children’s Miracle Network, will be able to do good work to help children for many years to come.
