Two Key Deals Announced in US Health IT Sector

There have been two significant acquisitions recently in the U.S. health IT sector. First Databank has acquired Design Clinicals, and SSI Group acquired Medibis.

SSI Group, which provides healthcare revenue and payment solutions, explains the acquisition of Medibis will expand SSI's reach in ambulatory and surgery centers, and physician offices.

Medibis offers solutions that turn raw data into intelligence. It is used in mobile apps, analytics and dashboards.

Ken Drazan, operating partner of Bertram Capital, worked on the acquisition and said in a statement, "We achieved our goal of creating an industry-leading data analytics solution in the surgical care market."

CEO of SSI Jimmy Lyons said Medibis is “nationally recognized as a market leader in business intelligence and mobile applications. This expertise, combined with our proven solutions in claims editing and clearinghouse services, provides a compelling product suite in the rapidly expanding ambulatory surgery center market."

Medibis will remain independent in SSI.

In another deal, First Databank (FDB), which provides clinical drug information, acquired Design Clinicals. Design Clinicals provides healthcare services for medication reconciliation and patient care.

“The Design Clinicals acquisition supports FDB’s mission of delivering solutions that help improve medication-related decisions,” Bob Katter, executive vice president of FDB, said in a statement. “The optimal electronic medication reconciliation solution needs to incorporate intuitive drug knowledge and seamlessly integrate with the leading information system vendors. This is where the combined abilities of FDB and Design Clinicals are well positioned.”

Medication reconciliation is a priority for Stage 1 meaningful use objectives and now Stage 2 objectives by eligible hospitals when it comes to medication use and electronic health records (EHR) – as recommended by U.S. national standards.

Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs are staged in three levels. Providers first meet Stage 1 requirements for 90 days in the first year of meaningful use and a full year in a second year of meaningful use. Next, providers meet Stage 2 requirements for two full years.

In addition, Design Clinicals' MedsTracker solution works with computerized physician order entry, electronic medication administration record, and pharmacy systems.

MedsTracker minimizes the risk of missed medications, incorrect doses, and improves provider efficiency. MedsTracker is used in 40 hospitals.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
