Health Techzone Week in Review

Welcome to a wrap-up of this week's inventions, trends and forecasts in the HealthTechZone Health Techzone. Let's take a look at some top stories that came from this week's news cycle.

For senior citizens, caretakers focus a lot of energy on preventing falls. They worry about falls for a good reason: For adults aged 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of death. They cost the U.S. healthcare system approximately $30 billion per year.

Eco Sound Medical Devices announced this week that it has developed the Fall-Safe Hip Protector. The Protector is designed to help senior in long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers and assisted living communities to prevent serious hip injuries in case of a fall. Seniors wear the device over their undergarments. Once it's on, their hips are protected by revolutionary D30 shock absorbing material. D30 is flexible until it suffers an impact. On impact, it becomes rigid and hard to protect the hip joints.

Also this week, ANGEL EYE, a healthcare technology company based in Arkansas, released a product called the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Camera System. Using a password-protected HIPAA-compliant Web browser, parents can connect with their premature babies through both video and audio.

Camera systems like this provide connection in an environment in which parents are often not allowed to touch their infants. Parents can access the camera feed through any Internet-enabled device. ANGEL EYE developed the new camera system for the University of Arkansas Medical System's (UAMS) Antenatal and Neonatal Guidelines, Education and Learning (ANGEL) Program.

Finally, the latest news from the Affordable Health Care frontier: The state of Idaho is jumping on the “Obamacare” train by agreeing to use federal security technology for its health insurance exchange portal. Idaho will deploy the technology through 2014, when it will implement a contract vendor solution. However, many critics remain concerned that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) won't have security technology ready for the October 1 open enrollment deadline.
