Orion to Provide Communications Backbone for North Dakota Health Information Network

The North Dakota Health Information Network (NDHIN) has tapped Orion Health to power the state's health information exchange (HIE) with plans to enhance its healthcare programs, particularly ones aimed at improving care transitions and expanding existing immunization registry data.

North Dakota's Health Information Technology Advisory Committee had the final say, after which the company received the contract to provide the backbone supporting NDHIN programs that advance the network's core vision.

As a large, sparsely populated state, NDHIN's success will depend largely on its ability to bridge multiple providers across several technology platforms, and North Dakota Health Information Technology directory Sheldon Wolf believes the enhanced features of Orion Health will ensure local providers have quick and accurate access to patient data.

“These capabilities will help improve clinical communications between hospitals and physician practices while helping to expand preventative care programs, such as smoking cessation and the state immunization registry.” said Wolf.

NDHIN plans on deploying Orion Health HIE, which is anchored by Orion Health Clinical Portal, Rhapsody Integration Engine and Clinical Data Repository. The group also plans to utilize Orion's Health Direct Secure Messaging to enable fast, standards-compliant communications between various healthcare providers and organizations, along with Orion Health Business Intelligence, which provides a platform to report on clinical information.

“The implementation of Orion Health HIE with Orion Health Direct Secure Messaging is another step forward for NDHIN and we are very excited about this opportunity to work with NDHIN,” said Paul Viskovich, president, Orion Health North America.

Orion Health was recently named as a founding member of Healtheway, a non-profit partnership to support the eHealth Exchange. The founding members’ activities will supplement the work of the Healtheway board of directors as they look to explore new health IT opportunities. Other founding members include Epic, ICA, Kaiser Permanente, MedVirginia, Mirth Corporation, New York eHealth Collaborative and WEDI.
