Raising Awareness about AIDS Makes the Online World See (RED)

The group (RED) – which is committed to preventing AIDS – is currently trying to draw attention to its efforts and raise global awareness.

On June 5, which marked the 32nd anniversary of the discovery of AIDS, it took to Vine, Twitter's new video social app.

The campaign tried to set a record for the most Vine recordings made in a single day for a cause. Hundreds of videos were believed to be submitted, according to news reports. They are six seconds or less in length.

(RED) had asked anyone to submit a Vine recording before 11:59 p.m. in their local time zone on that day. Entries were tagged with “#REDWorldRecord.”

Those appearing in the videos were asked to wear, record or say something (RED), according to The Next Web.

Model Kate Upton was among the celebrities backing the cause.

Some of the videos will be shown on the NASDAQ-sponsored large screen in Times Square in New York City, and on Mashable’s homepage.

Every day, 900 babies are born with the HIV virus. By 2015, the organization wants that number to be near zero, according to a (RED) blog post.

The main goal of (RED) is to eliminate AIDS in Africa. So far, it has been able to raise some $200 million to fight HIV/AIDS there. The group says the donations have helped an estimated 14 million people. The money raised goes to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa.

The number of submitted entries wasn’t immediately known – but the participation rate was believed to be impressive, especially among younger Vine users.

“Setting the record shouldn't be too much of a problem, considering Vine has been around only since late January, but the campaign should be effective with younger users, who have embraced Vine and grown the app to more than 13 million users since it launched,” according to a report from The Los Angeles Times.
