TMCnet Health TechZone Week in Review

If you're taking a quick break from your last-minute tax preparation, then join me as we review HealthTechZone's coverage in the Health TechZone this week.

A major theme this week was the worldwide growth of telemedicine. In New England, Massachusetts General Hospital announced a six-month telemedicine pilot program powered by American Well.

American Well will provide its Online Care platform to allow physicians and patients to communicate from tablets, smartphones or desktop computers. Mass General will allow telehealth conferencing for Heart Failure, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Neurological Movement Disorders.

From Massachusetts, we move to France, where Medical Insight is providing its EasyViz Viewer to power telemedicine for stroke diagnosis. Four hospitals – Caen, Saint Lo, Cherbourg and Lisieux – will use the EasyViz Viewer to receive telehealth consultations for stroke patients who come to their emergency rooms.

ER personnel can send imaging studies like CT scans or MRIs to neurological specialists over a broadband connection using EasyViz. Then, the physician can access the patient's electronic medical record and set up a live video stream with the ER personnel.

From France, we head to the Canary Islands, controlled by Spain and now serve as the home for Spain's first telemedicine network. The University Hospital of the Canary Islands on Tenerife, the archipelago's largest island, will connect with the General Hospital on the Island of La Palma thanks to Cisco HealthPresence.

Cisco HealthPresence integrates with any third-party video terminal supporting the SIP/H.323 standard. The solution also integrates with mobile devices using Cisco's Jabber platform.

From the Canary Islands, we take a long trip to New Zealand, where Vivid Solutions has developed trial videophones that tuberculosis patients can use for home monitoring. The World Health Organization (WHO) requires patients who have tuberculosis to be observed taking their medications to prevent the infection from spreading.

The Vivid Solutions managed video conferencing solution utilizes the Polycom platform.

From New Zealand, we fly back to HealthTechZone headquarters in Connecticut. Join us every day to review the latest in telemedicine technology and other news from the Health TechZone.
