Six-Month Telehealth Pilot Program at Massachusetts General Hospital

American Well announced this week that a three-pronged telehealth pilot program has been established in Massachusetts General Hospital, the third-oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest hospital in New England.

This new program will be focusing on Adolescent and Child Psychiatry first, and then Heart Failure, and Neurology. The program has been constructed to provide current patients at Mass General healthcare with services where physicians would be available to their patients via real-time live video visits.

The six-month pilot will launch later this month at the hospital, and patients will be offered the access to use telehealth visits in the clinical areas of Heart Failure, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and Neurological Movement Disorders.

The Online Care platform designed by American Wells was put into place to expand the ability for physicians to be able to take better care of their patients, all from the patients’ home or work from a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Through this online treatment campaign, physicians will be able to review all of their patients’ clinical information, see the patient, talk with him/her, suggest necessary follow-up care and prescribe medications.

The telehealth program has also been set up to follow all HIPAA rules, thus protecting the security of the health information for patients and their privacy. With child and adolescent psychiatry, the program will focus on those with autism and ADHD. Since in many cases it is hard for parents with either disorders to get an appointment with a doctor after school hours, the program will ensure that patients can be seen in their own homes.

For Neurology patients, the program will make it easier on its patients that have a hard time traveling to their appointments, and will offer home visits. For patients that battle heart failure, the pilot program will make it possible for cardiologist to have a video visit with their patients from the privacy of their own home.

If at the end of the pilot program all goes well, the program may be expended beyond just the three clinic areas at Mass General Hospital.
