Welch Allyn Enhances Patient Care through Vitals Surveillance and Electronic Documentation Systems

Digital and connected medical diagnostic solutions provider Welch Allyn recently featured two new products intended to improve patient care at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society trade show.

One product was the EarlySense Vitals Surveillance System, a patient monitoring solution that enables clinicians to measure heart rate, respiration rate and patient movement without requiring any direct or physical contact with the patient, made possible through a sensor located under the mattress of a bed.

Welch Allyn recently signed a deal with EarlySense to distribute this system to hospitals throughout the nation.

In addition to providing information on vitals, the Surveillance System also informs staff members of any changes in a patient's status.

"Knowing that the patient is always monitored and that the system will alert if a parameter is crossed makes the patients, their families, and the nursing staff feel comfortable," Timothy Quigley, vice president of nursing services and chief nursing officer at Massachusetts' South Shore Hospital, said in a statement. "It also helps us to more proactively and efficiently treat our patients, avoid adverse events, save lives, and ultimately save the hospital money."

The other product highlighted during the trade show was Welch Allyn's Connex Electronic Vitals Documentation System, which allows patient data to be immediately transmitted to an EMR as it is obtained. The system consists of a Vital Signs Monitor, which provides automatic measurements, such as heart rate, blood pressure and temperature, and manual parameters, such as respiration, height, weight and pain levels, on a single display.

"The solutions Welch Allyn is featuring at HIMSS13 are a direct result of the growing demand for comprehensive technologies that anticipate and respond to unique healthcare provider needs around the world," Dave Perkins, senior category manager of Vital Signs at Welch Allyn, said in a statement. "The products offer easy-to-use features and options that provide clinicians with access to information they need to provide the best possible patient care."
