Leica Biosystems and Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences will Provide Pathology Cases to Chinese Physicians

Researchers around the world are using technology to solve a myriad of medical related problems. Whether it is using PCs to map out the human genome or using mobile devices to help in cancer research, the possibilities seem limitless. Technology solutions also break down barriers between nations that might have disagreements in other facets of their association. A new collaboration between Leica Biosystems and Dell healthcare and Life Sciences will give physicians in China access to pathology cases from US healthcare organizations.

This type of access gives Chinese physicians expert reviews of pathology cases through a secure cloud network with real-time delivery. This collaboration involves some of the most renowned US health institutions including: Cleveland clinic, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dianon/Lab Corp. and ProPath.

Using the technology from Leica Biosystems imaging and Dell’s cloud-based solution powered by its unified clinical archive, a secure and scalable IT platform is being used to provide access to pathology images so doctors in China and the United States can better treat their patients with the best information available.

"Dell is excited to work with Leica Biosystems on this initiative and to facilitate the sharing of whole slide pathology images via the cloud. This is a prime example of how a hybrid cloud solution with application-neutral data management capabilities can break down traditional information silos and allow healthcare organizations to securely manage, store and share data to advance patient care even across great distances," said August Calhoun, Ph.D., vice president and general manager of Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences.

The field of pathology deals with the nature and causes of diseases. It has nine areas of specialty which relate to the method used in investigating the particular disease. Pathology plays a very critical role in all of medicine, which is why it is said “Medicine is Pathology.”

Leica Biosystem is established in more than 100 countries with manufacturing facilities in six countries providing a global laboratory workflow solution for anatomic pathology. The company has a range of products in the entire pathology process with researchers as renowned experts in their field.

"Demand for pathology services in China is growing rapidly and we need easier access to experts both inside and outside of China to keep up with the demand," "Connecting China and the U.S. through our collaboration with Dell begins to meet our goal to address the regional and global imbalances of pathology expertise available for patient care by enabling access to pathologists, regardless of location," said Matthias Weber, M.D., president of Leica Biosystems.
