Teleflex Wins Three-Year Contract for Vascular Positioning System

Teleflex Incorporated (TFX), a global provider of medical devices for critical care and surgery, has been awarded a three-year innovative technology agreement with Novation for the ARROW VPS Vascular Positioning System.

This will replace the need for chest X-rays with “state-of-the-art, real-time intravascular Doppler, ECG and advanced algorithmic logic to notify the clinician that the catheter tip has reached the optimal location,” according to a press release.

Simply put, algorithmic logic is a set of instructions for solving a problem. Using this kind of approach relieves patients of the need to be exposed to radiation. Vascular positioning systems are used for high-resolution imaging of tissue and blood flow.

The agreement includes the VPS console, stylets and pre-loaded stylets and is effective Sept. 1, 2012 through Aug. 31, 2015.

The preloaded option makes it easier for clinicians navigate through the body’s veins and to position the catheter tip. Precise placement is critical for cardiac catheterization, a heart test used to diagnose heart disease and provide treatment.

During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and travels up to the heart. Angioplasty and stenting are often done this way.

Novation chose Teleflex based on its innovative technology evaluation process – which identifies technology that improves patient care or reduces the risk of harm to patients or providers, while simultaneously raising the standard of patient care and safety.

“We are pleased to partner with Novation in order to deliver innovative product lines to such a vital segment of the healthcare industry,” said Paul Molloy, president of the vascular division of Teleflex, in the press release. “We are dedicated to providing technologies for clinicians who strive to make zero complications in vascular care a reality. This agreement demonstrates our continuous commitment to work together to reduce vascular access complications and improve ease of use for clinicians.”

In April, Teleflex received European market clearance for its vascular positioning system.
