Dell and SoloHealth Combine Forces in Healthcare Kiosk Venture

Round Rock-based Dell Inc. and healthcare technology company, SoloHealth Inc. are coming together to manufacture high-tech health care kiosks, which will identify risk factors related to obesity, hypertension and vision.

SoloHealth developed the self-service kiosk, which performs a health risk assessment, using an interactive questionnaire. The kiosks also measure blood pressure, body mass index and visual acuity, and have a symptoms checker.

SoloHealth's $12 million investment by health insurer WellPoint Inc., in early August, will be used to help SoloHealth conduct a national rollout that would put its health kiosks in more than 8,000 locations, including Walmart stores.

The deal will significantly increase the start-up's visibility, expanding the company¹s kiosks in Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations nationwide, a report stated wrote, adding that, “although SoloHealth CEO and founder Bart Foster wouldn't disclose specifics, sources report it could be more than 2,000 locations.”

Some people believe that these kinds of kiosks will change healthcare forever, a story at National Public Radio imparted. “They're part of an effort by the healthcare industry to go where the people are,” as Sam Evans-Brown of New Hampshire Public Radio told his audience.

Dell's part in all this is to have its OEM Solutions unit manufacture and deliver thousands of SoloHealth Station kiosks to retail locations nationwide beginning this fall. Its production expertise and distribution infrastructure will help the start-up ramp up quickly. Currently SoloHealth has kiosks in just 300 stores.

"By providing SoloHealth with a single source for the financing, hardware and deployment of its kiosk, we give them the reliability and flexibility to expand into new opportunities," as Joyce Mullen, a Dell vice president, said.

Dell’s getting a pretty nice deal, too. The partnership provides entrée into the fast-growing consumer health and wellness kiosk for this well-known computer company.
