New PTSD App Released by DoD

When it comes to post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD for short, the treatment of the condition can be a hard one to manage. After all the sense of fear, and the reliving of the traumatic events can happen just about any time and it can be difficult to manage all of the issues that come along with that.

In order to ease the suffering of those veterans who are dealing with the condition the workers at the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs have just released a new tool designed to help soldiers cope in real time. They have released a new app for smartphone users that is designed to help them cope with their PTSD whenever they have a problem.

The app, which has been dubbed PE Coach, is designed to be used with the treatment plan prescribed by a therapist instead of in place of traditional therapy. The app was designed by a team of Psychologists who work at the Defense Department's National Center for Telehealth and Technology.

Two of the doctors who worked on the project had some interesting comments about the value of this new app. Dr. Jonathon Woodson, the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, said the following, "PE Coach is a helpful tool that assists our service members and veterans who are between visits and in treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. We have shared this app with our military health care providers as well, and hope that many individuals who are receiving PE therapy will find it useful." That sentiment was echoed by Dr. Greg Reger, a clinical psychologist in T2's Innovative Technology Applications division, who said, "We worked with a broad and diverse group of psychologists in the DoD and VA who are treating PTSD patients with prolonged exposure therapy. We wanted to help our patients in the therapy and make it easier for providers to deliver this treatment. PE Coach does both."

The app is available for both Android based smart phones and iDevices such as the iPhone.
