Amcom Helps Avera McKennan Hospital Improve Emergency Communications

An increasing number of hospitals in the U.S. are deploying enhanced 911 (E911) communications systems to ensure life-saving communications among staff, patients and first responders.

Amcom Software, a provider of unified communications technologies, announced that Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center has selected E911 communications solutions from Amcom Software to notify first responders of a 911 caller’s exact location.

Located in Sioux Falls, S.D., Avera has deployed Amcom's enhanced 911 (E911) system with its call center solutions to alert both the public safety answering point as well as on-site personnel when people need immediate assistance.

The Amcom E911 solution encompasses more than 10,000 phones throughout Avera's large campus. When a user dials 911, the system sends the precise location of the call, alerting the first responders.

In addition, the hospital also uses Amcom's operator console and web directory solutions in its busy call center that handles thousands of calls every day. When 911 calls are placed, first responders often contact the call center en route to the facility to coordinate care.

Amcom's solutions are seamlessly integrated with Avera's Siemens and Cisco phone systems.

"We have a responsibility to make sure everyone throughout our campus is safe, whether they are in our hospitals, clinics, or assisted living facilities," said Jason DiMercurio, manager of Communications & Medical Interpreters for Avera, in a statement. "To that end, the Amcom Software solutions help us make communications faster and more accurate."

"More and more hospitals understand how enhanced 911 software is critical for life-saving communication," said Chris Heim, president, Amcom Software, in a statement. "We're honored Avera McKennan Hospital is using our technology to keep all on their premises safe."

Recently, Amcom announced that Winthrop-University Hospital is using Amcom solutions for smartphone messaging and web-based on-call scheduling for its 591-bed facility in Long Island, N.Y.
