Improvements in technology have changed multiple aspects of our lives, but the healthcare industry especially has seen its share of benefits offered from these advancements. Chilamrk Research found that 22 percent of physicians had an iPad at the end of 2010, a number that has surely increased as the popularity of tablets has surged since then. Four out of five practicing physicians use smartphones, computer tablets, various mobile devices and numerous apps in their customary medical practices.
According to Medicare, 2,217 hospitals were due to receive penalties starting on October 2012 for high readmission rates soon after discharge. The penalties will cost the hospitals $280 million, a tough blow in this economic climate. The government is clamping down on readmission because it says avoidable readmission costs Medicare about $17 billion every year. Hospitals nationwide are searching for practical solutions to reduce readmission without jeopardizing the health and safety of their patients. The collaboration between Qualcomm Life, VRI and Tri-City Medical Center (TCMC) hopes to achieve this goal by using wireless technology, logistics and monitoring services.
The University of Connecticut is setting up an Institute for Systems Genomics in anticipation of the planned opening of The Jackson Laboratory at UConn's healthcare center. Jackson Laboratory is building a $1.1-billion genomics center at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.
With the number of mobile fitness apps growing, it appears that the market has been saturated with applications that don't actually help you lose weight or add any muscle.
